One of the biggest stories of the NFL offseason just took a terrible turn.
It could have major implications for the 2021 NFL season.
And a star NFL quarterback just got accused of covering up this terrible sex crime.
There are now 19 lawsuits filed against Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson accusing him of sexual assault or harassment.
One of the latest lawsuits accuses Watson of trying to cover up his alleged sexual misconduct by scrubbing his social media accounts and reaching out to potential accusers.
The New York Post reports:
“As a result of the repeated lawsuits against him, Watson is deleting Instagram messages, and contacting those who formally provided him massages in an attempt to settle,” one of the lawsuits stated.
The three latest lawsuits also accuse the 25-year-old Watson of “purposely” touching the women with his penis, while stating that the NFL star’s conduct “is part of a disturbing pattern.”
Watson’s lawyer Rusty Hardin told The Post that Watson deleting social media messages was routine.
“Like a lot of people, Deshaun regularly deletes past Instagram messages. That said, he has not deleted any messages since March 15th, the day before the first lawsuit was filed,” Hardin told The Post. “We categorically deny that he has reached out directly to his accusers in an attempt to settle these cases.”
But it’s getting harder and harder for the NFL to ignore the allegations piling up against Watson.
Watson has demanded a trade from Houston, but the possibility of a team wanting to trade for a quarterback – who at best may be suspended multiple games and at worst end up in jail – seems remote at this point.
Watson still deserves the presumption of innocence, but this situation is a P.R. nightmare that could quickly spiral into a serious criminal investigation.
