The NFL draft begins on Thursday.

Teams at the top of the draft are always looking to make a splash at the quarterback position.

Now an NFL coach gave this jaw-dropping answer about trading his star quarterback.

Two years ago, Jimmy Garoppolo led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl.

But by the weekend, he may be out of work.

The 49ers suffered a difficult 2020 season finishing 6-10 and missing the playoffs.

49ers General Manager John Lynch decided now was the time to reset the roster and make a blockbuster trade to move up to the number three pick in this year’s draft, which features a loaded quarterback class.

The 49ers are picking a quarterback, which means Garoppolo’s days on the roster are numbered.

And apparently 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan floated the idea that Garoppolo’s days on the team may be numbered as well.

When asked if the 49ers would still have Garoppolo on the roster after the draft concluded this weekend, Shanahan responded that he would not even guarantee he would be alive.

“I can’t guarantee that anybody in the world will be alive on Sunday, so I can’t guarantee who will be on our roster on Sunday,” Shanahan said.

The 49ers made a major trade to acquire Garoppolo in the 2017 seasons and subsequently signed him to a five year, $137.5 million contract.

And while Garoppolo is 22 and 8 as a starting quarterback for the 49ers, he’s only played six and three games in two of the last three years, which saw the Niners post losing records sandwiched around their Super Bowl run.

That was enough for Lynch and Shanahan to conclude this year’s draft provided the opportunity for the 49ers to rebuild around a quarterback on his rookie contract.

When a team drafts a quarterback with the number three pick in the draft they no longer sit on the bench and learn their craft.

The reality of the NFL salary cap dictates they need to play right away.

And that makes it very likely “Jimmy G” will find himself on a new team for the 2021 season.
