For the last four seasons, Tim Tebow tried to make it as a major league baseball player.
The former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback was about to report to spring training to take one last crack at making the big leagues.
But then Tim Tebow just made a huge announcement about this major career change.
After four seasons in the minors with the New York Mets – where he rose as high as AAA ball – Tebow announced his retirement from baseball just as he was about to report to Port St. Lucie for the Mets spring training camp.
“I want to thank the @Mets , Mr. Alderson, the fans, and all my teammates for the chance to be a part of such a great organization. I loved every minute of the journey, but at this time I feel called in other [directions], I never want to be partially in on anything. I always want to be 100% in on whatever I choose. Thank you again for everyone’s support of this awesome journey in baseball, I’ll always cherish my time as a Met!” Tebow wrote on social media.
In four minor league seasons, Tim Tebow hit 18 home runs and knocked in 107 runs.
Mets President Sandy Alderson thanked Tebow for his contribution and wished him the best.
“It has been a pleasure to have Tim in our organization as he’s been a consummate professional during his four years with the Mets,” Alderson stated. “By reaching the Triple-A level in 2019, he far exceeded expectations when he first entered the system in 2016 and he should be very proud of his accomplishments.”
But Tebow’s career in sports does not appear to be over.
Tebow’s former coach at the University of Florida Urban Meyer recently signed on to become the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and there are reports Meyer would like to bring Tebow on to his coaching staff.
ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florida speculated, “With Tebow’s former head coach at Florida now coaching the Jaguars, maybe Tebow’s next step will include working with (but not playing for) Urban Meyer. After last week’s Chris Doyle debacle, finding a job for someone with Tebow’s character and reputation could be the perfect palate cleanser.”
